New front brake pads and steering rack bushings ordered for the Jag. Gotta get the safety items out of the way before I can start having fun! Hopefully the hubs simply need the bearing preload adjusted but I may just end up rebuilding them.

Not sure what I’m going to do about the steering rack. The end-seals are leaking an alarming amount of fluid and the sealing surfaces look too marred up for replacing the seals to do any good. I wonder how difficult it would be to pilot a 4000lb vehicle with no power steering?

Oh, also. After rebuilding the carb I appear to now be getting city fuel economy in the double digits, possibly!

Also how much of a douche will I be if I start referring to my car as a “Jaguar S-type”?

Fun fact: the “thick rugs on the floor” and “thermostatically-controlled heat and air conditioning” are two of the ‘s-type’s Achilles heels. The condensation pan drain holes of the HVAC leak and water drains onto the “thick rugs” which absorb it and hold it against the floor like a pillow over a suffocating murder victim until the floor rusts through. Fabulous. I swear I’ll fix it eventually.

I’ve been without power steering on my SC for over a year now. It’s fine when the cars moving and feeling the tires better is nice when cornering but parking is a real hassle and takes longer. That being said the SC weighs 400 pounds less

Yeah this thing is a bit of a bear to wrestle around a parking lot as it is... but $250 is a bear to part with.

There are manifold reasons why one shouldn’t call an XJS – or even an XJ-S – an “S-type”, but a pretty good emotional one is seeing it being used in a brochure with British Leyland’s notorious pissoir logo.

Re: steering I would worry more about the rack eventually and inadvertently loosing all its fluid, therefore not being lubricated and leading to much seriouser things.

Fixing the floor should be the top of the list before any of this other stuff.

Why? I have a wooden floor for now. It works. I’d rather fix stuff that is known for causing loss of control of the car (steering rack bushings, brake pads, wheel hub adjustment) as well as the issue that caused the rust in the first place (crap drains from the A/C drain pan) instead of stuff that amounts to mostly being an annoyance (warm breeze from holes in the floor).

It’s a pretty obvious safety issue in a unibody car. From the one pic you posted it looked like there was nothing at the transition from the firewall to the floor pans. The floor pans in a unibody car are a structural element. That thing will just fold up in a crash.
